Sotirio, Podernuovo a Palazzone, 2021

90 NJP

Sotirio, Podernuovo a Palazzone, 2021 (59 EUR/67 USD in Sweden) red dry wine, Tuscany, Italy, 90 NJP (22-07-2026 by Dr Nenad Jelisic)

Wow what a wine! Definitely the best 100% Sangiovese-wine that NJ Wines has so far managed to taste this year. The aroma is big, concentrated, sweet spicy, complex and fruity. In it one will find dark cherries, sweet tobacco, vanilla, cocoa, cardamom, violets, crème de cassis, blackberry jam and cinnamon. The flavour is tannin rich, dry, concentrated, complex, fruity and fresh. In it one will find plenty of tannins, dark sour cherries, sweet spices, blood orange, cocoa rich dark chocolate, black pepper, herbs and minerals. The aftertaste stays forever in the mouth. It is very dry, sweet spicy and fresh. Thanks to its robust tannins and its really good tartaric acid, and the brilliant balance between these two, Sotirio Podernuovo a Palazzone 2021 has a long life ahead of it, up to 15 years, i.e. until at least 2041. The wine can be drunk right now, but it will be even better in a few years. If you prefer the first option, then you should drink it with tasty and calorie rich food. Last but not least, if the wine will be drunk within the next three years, it should be decanted between 2 and 3 hours before it will be enjoyed.

A wine like this requires calorie rich and flavourful food such as creamy pasta (fresh) with bacon, basil, sun-dried tomatoes and small pieces of chicken thigh fillets; Pizza á la Jelisic (Pizza Vesuvio with thin slices of beef tenderloin, black olives, red onion and Parmesan cheese); lamb patties with potato gratin and red wine sauce; Beef Wellington with Hasselback potatoes and funnel chanterelle sauce; Boeuf Bourguignon with buttery mashed potatoes; a really good and flavourful burger with two slices of cheese and bacon from your favourite burger restaurant; elk patties with roasted root vegetables and red wine sauce; grilled beef fillet/entrecôte with café de Paris sauce and potato gratin; reindeer stew with buttery mashed potatoes; grilled pork chops with grilled red peppers, red onions and tomatoes and Béarnaise sauce and aged cheeses such as Cheddar, Gouda, Grana Padano, Parmigiano Reggiano, Svecia and Västerbotten. As written above, the wine benefits from to be decanted between two and three hours. Sotirio Podernuovo a Palazzone 2021 should be drunk at 16 to 18°C from real Bordeaux glasses, if possible, from Kosta Boda, Orrefors, Riedel or Spiegelau. Another option is to serve it, without decanting, at 16°C (when the room temperature is above 22°C or outside temperature is above 24°C) and enjoy it slowly, and follow it when it starts to open/grow in the glass.

If the wine is so wonderful when the vines were "only" 14 years old, one can imagine what will happen in a few more years.

Sotirio Podernuovo a Palazzone 2021 consists of 100% Sangiovese. The grapes for the wine come from a four-hectare vineyard in Tuscany. The soil consists of clay with limestone strips. The vines are only treated with natural products such as sulphur and copper. The grapes are picked by hand. The yield is a low 40 hl/ha. After very careful selections in both the vineyards and the winery, the grape bunches are soft pressed. Some of the grapes are kept intact to be able to carry out a partial carbonic maceration with the aim of highlighting the Sangioveses’ aroma and taste. The grape mass, which consists of crushed and uncrushed grapes, and grape juice, is macerated and fermented for 20 to 35 days in open wooden tanks with two over-pumping (remontage) per day. Then the grape mass is gently pressed, and the wine is moved to 1,000 litres oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and after the malolactic fermentation the wine is aged in the same oak barrels in which it has been malolactic fermented for between 18 and 24 months. The wines from the various oak barrels are blended in concrete barrels and then aged for 6 months. Finally, the wine is bottled and aged for a few weeks before is released on the market.

Podernuovo a Palazzone's wines are imported to Sweden by Solid Wine.
