Rioja, a DOCa-classified wine region, which belongs to the geographical area of La Rioja. Rioja was the first Spanish wine region to be both DO-classified (year 1925) and DOCa-classified (year 1991). Right now, only Rioja and Priorat are DOCa-classified. Rioja consists of three wine districts: Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and Rioja Oriental (before Rioja Baja). The vineyards are located at an altitude of 350 to 650 m above sea level. Rioja’s terrain is hilly and consists of rolling hills. Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta has Atlantic climate while Rioja Oriental has a Mediterranean climate. The summers are warm (40°C) while the winters are moderately cold (min -4°C). On average it rains 450 mm per year (comparatively it rains 600 to 700 mm per year in Sweden). Rioja has 63,137 ha planted with grapes and it produces about 2,988,000 hl per year. The yield is on average 49 hl/ha for red wines and 67 hl/ha for white wines. The wines are mostly aged in American oak barrels, but French oak barrels are used more and more. Previously it was not unusual that the wines were aged for 20 years or more before they were released on the market. Today, the wines are aged between 4 and 8 years. A typical winery in Rioja stores (ages) 10,000 to 40,000 oak barrels. (2021-01)
