Riesling, a green wine grape. Nutrient-poor and mineral-rich soil with good drainage properties (for example, weathered igneous rocks and weathered metamorphic rocks) is ideal for growing the grape. Riesling grown on clay gives the most powerful Riesling-wines, while Riesling grown on weathered igneous rocks or/and weathered metamorphic rocks gives Riesling-wines with great richness of flavour and finesse. Riesling, which is grown in the right way and on the right place (for example, the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine region in Germany or the Venje appellation in Croatia), gives wines that are suitable for aging and are fresh; wines with aroma and flavour of citrus fruits, yellow pears, yellow apples, honey, nectarines and minerals. The best Riesling-wines have a long aging potential, and over the years, often begin to smell and taste like petroleum. (2026-01)

Rioja, a Spanish wine region that is DOCa-classified and belongs to the geographical area of La Rioja. Rioja was the first Spanish wine region to be both DO-classified (in 1925) and DOCa-classified (in 1991). At the moment, only Rioja and Priorat are DOCa-classified. Rioja consists of three wine districts: Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja). The vineyards are located at an altitude of 350 m to 650 m. Rioja's terrain is hilly, consisting of rolling hills. Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta have an Atlantic climate while Rioja Oriental has a Mediterranean climate. The summers are hot (max 40 degrees) and the winters are moderately cold (min -4°C). On average, it rains 450 mm per year (in comparison, it rains 600 mm to 700 mm per year in Sweden). The 63,137 ha planted with wine grapes produce 2,988,000 hl per year. The yield is on average 49 hl/ha for red wines and 67 hl/ha for white wines. Within Rioja there are the following quality designations that regulate the aging time: Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. Crianza, the red wines must be aged for at least 24 months, of which at least 12 months in oak barrels. Reserva, the red wines must be aged for at least 36 months, of which at least 12 months in oak barrels and at least 6 months in bottles. Gran Reserva, the red wines must be aged for at least 60 months, of which at least 24 months in oak barrels and at least 24 months in bottles. The red wines are mostly aged in American oak barrels, but French oak barrels are used more and more. In the past, it was not uncommon that the red wines were aged for 20 years or more before they were released on the market; today, the most wines are aged for between 0 and 5 years. A typical Rioja winery stores from 10,000 to 40,000 oak barrels. (2026-01)
