Rioja grapes, Tempranillo is the most widely used grape in the wine region. It covers between 70 and 80% of the area planted with vines. Of the grapes that are used for red wines, Tempranillo accounts for around 88%, Garnacha Tinta for around 7,6%, Graciano for around 2,2% and Mazuelo (Carignan) for around 2,1%. Of the grapes that are used for white wines, Viura (also called Macabeo) accounts for around 69% and Tempranillo Blanco for around 12,5%. Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia Riojana, Sauvignon Blanc, Turruntés and Verdejo together account for around 18,5%. (2026-01)
